Windows
XP Administration
Local Group Policy Editor
One of the most full featured Windows XP configuration tools
available is hidden right there in your system, but most people
don't even know it exists. It's called the Local Group Policy
Editor, or gpedit for short. To invoke this editor, select Start
and then Run, then type the following: gpedit.msc
After you hit ENTER, you'll be greeted by gpedit, which lets you
modify virtually every feature in Windows XP without having to
resort to regedit.
Msconfig
Msconfig is a diagnostict tool developed by Microsoft for the
support engineers. This too was introduced in Windows 98 to decrease
call times associated with technical support. Imagine as dificult
it is for DOS when you are in front of a computer then try to
do this over the telephone with someone who has no experince.
The call times were greatly reduced decresing costs for Microosft
and improving support for the customer.
To access Msconfig
click on the Start Menu>>Run and then type msconfig
Warning this is a diagnostic tool not an answer to the problem.
Various technical support centers find it is easier to tell you
the problem is resolved after leaving the customer in a selctive
start up mode. This is not the case, the customer is now left
with windows in a temporary state writing files to temporary folders
in the registry; this can actually cause the operating system
to fail. Once the problem is diagnosed resolve the issue then
place the machine back in a normal start up.
DO
NOT LEAVE YOUR MACHINE IN A SELECTIVE START UP
